Help, What Color Should I Paint my Guest Room?

I need your HELP!  I am in the midst of planning a makeover for the guest room.  The room’s theme and decor are slowly coming together in my mind.  Yet, I am a little bit stuck on just one decision - what color should the walls be painted?

Here is what the guest room looks like now...

As you can see, it could use a little help.  The walls are still the plain white they were when we first moved into the home.  There is nothing that you see in the room that I plan to keep except for the bed and the little painting which hangs in the back corner (more on the painting in a moment).

The planned decor theme for the room is the ocean.  I lived near the ocean while growing up in Brazil.  There is just something calming and soothing about the sea! Maybe it is the salty cool breeze one feels while laying on a beach, or the gritty texture of warm sand between one's toes.  Perhaps it is the soothing sound of the waves.  Not only is the ocean soothing, but it is also visually relaxing.  The ocean is at its best at dawn and dusk!  I love the warm colors of the sky and sea when the sun is low on the horizon.  This is the vibe I am seeking for my guest room.  Without it being nautical, I want the room to be a soothing and welcoming place of retreat - like the beach.  I want our guests to have the feeling that they are in a warm and breezy ocean cabana that has a clean and elegant feel.

In order to achieve this feeling in the room, color is going to be key.  I have a few photographs we’ve captured through the years, which are full of color inspiration from the ocean.  I would like to choose one of them to guide the choice of the wall color and coordinating colors in the guest room.

The first photo is of this washed-up boat sitting on a beach in Santa Barbara, California at sunrise.  I love the rustic feel of the boat, the calm in the water and the beautiful reflection.

The next photo I’m considering for a color palette is of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.  Before my husband became disabled, he traveled much for work. One morning he got up early and captured this shot.  I love the calm ambience!  The sunlight brightens the scene with a beautiful warm glow. The blues of the water and sky are soothing while the greens in the grass depict vibrant life.

The final possible color inspiration comes from the painting that already hangs in the corner of the guest room.  It is a painting of a brazilian fishing boat called a Jangada.  The sky is a beautiful calm grey.  There are just a few touches of color to make the painting interesting, and the frame is a rustic, dark brown.

So, help me out here... If you were to create a guest room based on one of these images, which would you choose?  What color should I pick to paint the walls?  A darker blue as found in the photos of Santa Barbara and San Francisco?  One of the warmer yellows or reds from the abandoned boat?  Or, should I choose the grey-blue from the painting?  There is also the option of an aqua from the water or a tan from the sand found in the photo of my kiddos on the beach.

Once I settle on a photo, I will upload it to mycolortopia.com to find a matching color of paint.  My Colortopia has a brilliant online tool from Glidden paint called, My Image Inspiration.   The tool allows you to find a paint color match from a photo!  For example, here are the colors My Image Inspiration suggests from a selection of the photo of the children on the beach:

So, there you have it.  With so many gorgeous colors of the ocean, you can understand my dilemma.  Any thoughts?  Which of these images would you choose as the main color inspiration?

Thanks for your help!  I’ll be sure to let you know what color(s) I settle on.  I'll also definitely be showing you the finished guest room remodel as soon as it is done.

  2. LOVE the beach color theme. Can't wait to see what you come up with! You can't go wrong with the colors of the sea though. Especially in a guest room!! Can I come visit? ;)

  3. First, those are GORGEOUS photos. You are amazing. Second, this before and after is going to be like night and day - I can't wait! Third, I think my favorite photo is the one of the bridge, but as far as colors go, I really love the colors in the picture of your kids on the beach. Fourth, I did not know you grew up in Brazil, that is so cool!
Great post! I'm excited to see what you choose :)

  6. WOW! What pretty photos! I LOVE the photo of the washed up boat! It is gorgeous and a little less personal...which I like for a guest room. (But I LOVE your other photo too!!!)

Anyway...I would create my guest room around the boat photo and pick a pretty, warm tan color (like the one in the boat) for your wall color :)

But the other one would be pretty too!

  9. Wow... those photos are stunning. Can you just blow them up and use them as wall paper? Just kidding, of course! But really, I love the boat from Santa Barbara and the warmth it brings. Not sure what that would translate to on the walls, though. The bridge is certainly soothing. You've got some great inspirations!!

And I think you know that I was inspired by my gray rainboots from Paris for my last paint job.

Can't wait to see the result!

  11. So, I was looking through the pictures, and I noticed that that grey-blue in the painting is actually in each one, though in varying shades. The boat picture has the ripples in the water in the lower left, with alternating lines of a light greyish-blue; the GG picture has the grey-blue in the sky. If I were to use these pictures, I'd go for the grey-blue. Plus, a grey-blue has the advantage that you can then coordinate the furniture and things based on either the blue or the grey-neutral aspect. Hope this helps you decide. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it'll come out great! Looking forward to seeing the results.

  12. I found you via Hometalk. I am leaning toward the "Winter Sky Grey of the ideas given by Colortopia.... but too much black pigment for me. I like a white, white, white blue.. but it is your house, your room. I think it will slap you in the face or you will just keep going back again and again to the color you like the best. So, guess that did not help much. Definitely choose your linens first, cause to choose paint and try to find great colors in linens is extremely or maybe I should say CAN be very difficult.

  33. Ooh, I'd go with a gray-blue from the bridge photo--there's so much depth and warmth to that photo that I can see decorating around it being amazing.

When we moved into our house the front room (and ceiling) were a salmon pink and orange. It was WAY too much, so I went with a really fresh color inspired by the ocean (I'm in California) accented with citrus colors. I LOVE what it did for the feel of the room.

  131. My last home decor project was inspired by what two little (6 and 4) boys would find fun and spark their creativity- I redid their bedroom and wanted it to be special. We painted two walls with neon glow in the dark paint and two with chalkboard paint and they chose a lot of the other decorating themselves. It was a lot of fun :)

  134. Ours is easier because we have a Victorian. We saw a similar house with warmer less 'museum-esque' colors and copied accordingly.

I love the green grass in the front of the picture. The bright golds coming in from the sun and there are so many different greys and blues from the sea and sky. It's just gorgeous!
