Have you ever tried to regrow veggies from the grocery store? A couple of weeks ago I was at my mother's house and she had these little stumps in a cup full of water, being held up by toothpicks. Curious, I asked what she was doing. She said she was attempting to regrow Romain Lettuce. I watched hers for a couple of days then decided to try it out myself.
Here it is on day 1. I cut off just the bottom of a head of Romain lettuce. I stuck three toothpicks in the bottom and filled the glass with water- just to cover the bottom a little bit. Then I placed it in a sunny location. I change the water every day in order to avoid bacteria. (By the way, the other plant in there is parsley, I was trying to see if I could get it to sprout roots---didn't work.)
I was so surprised when I looked at it three days later. The lettuce had begun to sprout new leaves!
By day 10 the little plant was beginning to really look like lettuce! I am excited to see how large it will get. When I planted lettuce in my garden in Ohio the leaves began to get bitter at the very end. I am curious to see how large the leaves will get, if the plant will develop roots or not, and how long it will go until the leaves begin to get bitter.
I'll keep you updated! Oh, and happy growing! :0)
