Well, a while ago I posted about some of my garage sale finds, and mentioned that I had ideas rolling through my head for each one. Today I'm going to show you what I ended up making with the formal purple skirt I found. As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to make some kind of fancy pillow out of it.
And here is how I got there:
First I pinned both side of the skirt together, making sure it was very even.
Then I measured 2 1/2 inches from the bottom and began marking at various intervals around the bottom of the skirt. After I had it measured, I cut a line across the bottom to make my strip. I cut 2 1/2 inch strips all the way up until I hit the zipper in the back.
Then I took those 2 1/2 inch strips, folded them in half length ways, right sides together, to make my long tube. I then turned it inside out. I tucked in the ends just a little bit and began wrapping my rose. With each little wrap I would stitch the tube in place.
Here you can see the back with stitching all over it. This kept the rose together and helped me make it wider and wider.
When I was satisfied with the size I placed it on top of some black velvet that I had and cut about 1/2" around it to make my pillow. I sewed those two pieces together, right sides together, leaving a little opening to stuff and turn it, then turned it inside out.
Next I took my rose and stitched it onto the black fabric circle. Little stitches, making sure to get just the back of the rose and not allow the stitches to show in the front.
This is where the process stopped for me, because I just simply cannot find my stuffing any where! But what you do next is simple. Stuff the pillow, and sew up the whole. Easy.
So, a $1 old formal garage sale skirt turned into this lovely pillow!
This is very beautiful. I love the color too. New follower here. Would love for you to share this at my linky party going on right now :) http://everything-underthemoon.blogspot.com/2011/11/guest-posting-at-midwestern-sewing-girl.html
